Enhance your digital teaching skills with TEL workshops
The Technology Enhanced Learning (TEL) division are pleased to announce the launch of the TEL Staff Development programme. This series, aimed at academic and academic-related staff, aims to enhance digital teaching and learning skills with a focus on the proactive design of learning experiences and learning materials for digital audiences.
We are currently offering two workshops:
Designing an effective and engaging digital learning activity
This hands-on workshop supports teaching staff to design effective and engaging digital learning activities, starting with learning design rather than technology. Participants will define their learners, learning outcomes, and context, then create a visual storyboard to represent the learner experience. Using this storyboard, they will explore and evaluate digital tools that best support their design, leaving with a clear, transferable plan for a digital learning activity.
By the end of this workshop, you will be able to:
- take a design-first approach to creating digital learning activity
- choose appropriate digital tools to facilitate digital learning experiences
- access appropriate digital learning resources and support

Based on feedback given after the workshop, all participants agreed they now felt “more confident designing effective and engaging digital learning experiences” and “choosing appropriate digital tools to facilitate learning experiences”.
Meet the facilitator
This workshop is currently run by Heather. We asked Heather why she thinks this workshop is beneficial to academic staff:
“Participants are given the time and space to really focus in on one specific digital learning activity. Through a series of steps, inspired by Design Thinking, participants develop a storyboard through careful consideration of the pedagogical, technological, and contextual considerations of the activity. By the end of the workshop, participants will have designed an activity that is both effective and engaging for their students, as well as developing the skills to continue creating successful digital learning experiences.”

About the workshop
This interactive workshop will guide you through designing the student journey through your course or module, with a strong focus on active learning and meaningful learning activities.
You will:
- Describe your course in a way that resonates with prospective students
- Identify the types of learning activities best suited to your module
- Map out a detailed, ideal version of your module
To get the most from the session, we encourage you to bring a specific module or course you would like to develop or redesign.
